Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - Snapshot

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - Snapshot

I'd heard so much about the Android mobile phone operating system (developed by Google) that by the time I got my hands on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, I was pretty eager to put it through its paces.

Before I even turned it on my first impression of the Xperia X10 was the size of the screen, it takes up pretty much all of the phone's surface....it's big! Flip the phone over and you're presented with an 8.1 megapixel camera....8.1? Wow! A couple of years ago our pocket digital camera boasted a 4 megapixel lens – and that was cutting edge.

The Xperia is slightly bigger and thicker than the iPhone but doesn't weigh much more and yet it still manages looks pretty streamlined. I popped open the back cover and easily inserted my SIM and the 8GB memory card that was included. Unless you're a sneaky paparazzi, 8GB of memory is plenty for the average gal.

Once switched on, the colours and resolution of the screen are magnificent and the touchscreen is responsive. Three silver buttons at the base of the screen control the main menus and so far Android looks very, very pretty indeed.

This looks promising, I'm excited to be able to test Android and the phone itself looks pretty smart and stylish. As with most touchscreen devices I'm concerned about scratching the hell out of the screen while it 'floats' around in my handbag, I'm also hoping the touchscreen continues to be as responsive and accurate.

I'll give it a thorough testing and report back once I've seen what this baby can do. Step one: I'm off to find a friend who has used Android and get some tips on the best apps so I can customise my experience to the max!

    Hi Mel,

What are your thoughts on the phone?

I got one on upgrade in June, and have already had it replaced - the unit I got was faulty. I have difficulty with accuracy when using the touch screen to type emails and sms's, and have had to significantly slow down, which is highly annoying as I like to get things done as in now.

The camera, while being 8.1 megapixel is (for me with a highly active toddler) disappointing - the delay between pressing the button and taking the shot often results in a blurred image, not the type of photos I would love to cherish of my child. Also, there is no program available to edit these pics (as with the C903 and C905 cybershot), so you have to download an app to enable you to edit pics.

I find the sound levels not high enough (I very often cannot hear the phone if it's in my bag).

As far as scratching goes, I found the touch screen to be pretty much scratch-proof (so far), and sticky finger marks are easily wiped away.

Personally, not the best choice I have made.
