Snaptu - Social Networking For Symbian OS

Snap to attention: social networking

If you have a Fairly-Intelligentphone (as I do - mine's called a Nokia E63), and you're a social network addict, (as I am, although I could quit tomorrow if I wanted, I swear) you probably won't find a better app right now than Snaptü. I think the best way to describe it would be an app aggregator, or One App To Rule Them All, if you're so inclined.

I started off looking for a decent Twitter client for Symbian, but with Snaptü I got much more than I'd bargained for. The basic package comes with a Facebook app, news feed, sports channels, weather, and so on. The real beauty of Snaptü is that it's fully customisable: I dropped the sports and cricket pages (because sports, ugh, no), added feeds from Gizmodo, Gawker and the Huffington post, as well as the simple-yet-effective Flickr app, and linked the news feed to my Google Reader account. There's even an Ebay app, but I'm too scared/broke to try that out.

It's a looker, for certain:

It's all rather pretty: simple, rounded icons, light bright colours, clean lines, and simplicity. I hate ugly apps, especially if my eyes are going to be assaulted them for hours at a time.

Snaptü is one-stop shopping, and has some limited cross-app information sharing- if you like a story in the HuffPo, for instance, you can post it to Twitter, or your Facebook page. Navigation is easy and the menus are fairly comprehensive, yet easy (the twitter menu, for example has View sender, reply, retweet, and search functions, all with keystroke shortcuts). If you're looking for a mobile internet fix when you're nowhere near a computer, and don't have a Really-Smartphone, Snaptü will make you happy.

It's smart, but not capable of multi-tasking

This is a simple programme that covers your basic needs: you're getting speed, simplicity, and user-friendliness. If you're looking for advanced commands, want to upload images or even just send a message to more than one contact at a time; however, don't expect to do that with Snaptü. I found that the blog reader copes best with text and small images, webcomics are shown as tiny thumbnails and there is no zooming in. you also don't seem to be able to jump to links from the feeds, so if the blog post is truncated in the reader, or there is a link within the post, you won't be able to follow it.

Load times are usually lightning-fast, but I've notice at peak user times- usually in the late afternoon and evening- Snaptü moves like a turtle through treacle. It becomes very frustrating very fast, probably because it's usually so reliable.

It's also slightly annoying that the shortcuts don't always sync up from app to app: in Twitter "refresh" is "menu+7", in Facebook it's "menu+1". A small quibble, but it can get irritation having to remember the different combinations.

Long story, short:

For the most part though, Snaptü is a great little app that works hard and keeps you in contact: it does what it says on the box, does it (mostly) efficiently, and looks pretty doing it. It's completely free and works on all phones that use java.
