IMDb App - In-depth Review

AT A GLANCE

Search:

  • Over 1.5 million movie and television titles
  • Over 3.2 million celebrities, actors, actresses, directors and other crew members
  • The top rated movies of all time (IMDb Top 250)
  • The most popular movies (MOVIEmeter) and celebrities of the day (STARmeter)imdb-iphone-app
  • The lowest rated movies ever (IMDb Bottom 100)
  • The best films by genre (Action, Horror, Comedy, etc.)
  • IMDB's best television shows
  • The US box office results
  • Celebrity birthdays

View:

  • Movie trailers, interviews and movie snippets
  • User and critic reviews
  • Quotes, trivia and movie mess-ups

Before heading out to the cinema or renting a movie, I usually scout the IMDb (international movie database) website to see critic ratings, find out the basic storyline and see which actors are in the flick. (The real reason I do this? So I don't stare blankly when my other half rambles on and on about all the actors in the movies that we just bought tickets for – his choice, of course.)

Thankfully, the folks at IMDb have made it easier for us movie-going people. They've created this handy, take-anywhere application for that last-minute movie decision, or just for browsing to see what the newest releases (and news) in the movie and television world are.

The appearance of the app is simple and elegant - it actually looks a lot like the IMDb website. You can do basics from the home screen from reading current news (it's nearly Oscar time!) to searching IMDB for anything movie or TV-related you need to know. You can also catch up on the latest celebrity gossip.

And if you happen to have an IMDB account, you can sign in to rate movies, manage personal lists (your best-ever romcoms?), or discuss your favourite, well, anything on the IMDB message boards. What was that funny thing Sheldon Cooper said to Penny on The Big Bang Theory a few episodes back? It's there. Who did the music in Braveheart? Where did that child actor go? If movies are your thing, the IMDB app will keep you connected.

Downloading and installing the app is easy and hassle-free. A quick search for “The King’s Speech” revealed quite a few search results. Tapping on just one of these uncovered all the need-to-know information I wanted to find out before going to see the blockbuster.

1234

The IMDB app really is the ultimate reference guide for those looking for movie and series information on-the-go. Comprehensive and tiny (only 5,2MB), it's hard to believe all of this is free.

The only downfall? It would be fantastic if the app catered for the South African market by allowing me to find out showtimes, etc, like it does for other countries. And if one of the local movie studios could do this? Even better!

Turn-ons

  • Easy to download, install and get started
  • Quick and comprehensive searches
  • Watch movie trailers from within the app

Turn offs

  • No local movie times... yet!
