MiniPaint - BlackBerry App Review

AT A GLANCE

  • Photo editing on-the-go for Blackberry addicts
  • User-friendly menus and tools
  • Uses a copy of your images for editing, so there's no chance of damaging your originals
  • Enhance photos taken with your BlackBerry by adding filters, captions or clip art

minipaint-iconMiniPaint has both a free and paid version, and I decided to give it a go and see if it was worth it. And let me tell you, this little app can do a few things, that none of the others I tried could.

For example, rotating or cropping an image - these seem like editing basics... until your try finding a BlackBerry app that actually offers this! Luckily, MiniPaint makes it possible.

Apart from that, you can add filters (effects) to your images, for example: a sepia filter, adjusting the hue and saturation, making the image grayscale, and then some. You can also add text or clip art to your images. (And if you not happy with pictures available, you can download more or create your own using MiniPaint's online clipart gallery.)

minipaint_open
Opening a photo with MiniPaint is as easy as going to the image in your library, pressing the BlackBerry button and selecting “open with MiniPaint”. From there you can edit the image, and save it, or share it directly to Twitter. (Facebook is not supported).

MiniPaint is a breeze to navigate – there’s hover-over text for each of the buttons, so you can make sure it’s what you want to do. Every action needs to be confirmed with the “apply” button as well, so if you don’t like the effect, you can just go back, and try something else.

When trying out filters, the app also divides the image in half, to display what it would look like with the filter applied. Applying the filter to a bigger image might take a bit of time, which is why the app recommends that you rather apply it to a smaller image for optimal results.

The app works with both PNG and JPG files, and saves a copy of the original with the effects for you to share as JPG. (If you're wondering what those capital letters mean, check out our how-to feature on filing right here.)

Whether you choose to use the free or paid version, MiniPaint is a decent photo editing app that has a lot of unique features, all in one pack. Simply put - you just won't find another app for BlackBerry with all features offered MiniPaint.

Turn ons

  • Easy to download and get started (the "hover-over text" makes it easy to choose exactly what you want to do)
  • The free version offers all the basics one may need to quickly edit and share photos

Turn offs

  • Only supports Twitter as social media platform, more options like Facebook would be nice...
  • Slower performance when editing larger pictures (highest quality setting)
  • When using BlackBerry 6 OS, there’s a window that keeps popping up when applying effects

Price: $1.99
