RCA Jet Stream MP3 Player – Review

QUICK LOOK

  • Wireless headphones
  • Built-in stopwatch, pedometer and calorie counter
  • Splash proof
  • Extremely light and durable

Okay, so you might remember my first impression of the Jet Stream MP3 player wasn’t really a stellar one and if I have to be completely honest it kind of put me off the device. But I’ve given it a fair go and before I tell you what I’ve deduced, let me first share with you what this little tyke can do.

It’s pretty much a gym companion in that it’s a pedometer, calorie counter, stopwatch and MP3 player all in one. Its lightness and assorted accessories (wristband/armband) ensure a comfortable and unencumbered workout and it stores up to about 340 songs at any one time so you can listen to some tunes while you’re sweating it out or catch up on your to-be-read pile of books with audible.com, if that’s your preference. A side note: the device is completely compatible with Yahoo! Music Jukebox (software included!) so that’s worth looking into as well. Photos and videos are displayed clearly, in spite of the tiny screen.

If you’re to have a look at everything that came with the player, cables and clips and cd’s, you might also think that setting everything up would be a hassle - like I did - but start-up is relatively straight forward. Just pop in the included disc and install the software, manual, and driver. Also included is software to convert your video files so they can be played on the Jet Stream if you’re so inclined. The same goes for charging, both the player and the wireless headphones charge via your desktop/laptop USB port. It’s all very unremarkable and hassle free.

The most advantageous feature and accessory are the wireless headphones that give you up to 14 hours battery life thanks to the built-in lithium rechargeable battery. This is a very good idea in theory but it saddens me to say that even though the reception was pretty great the earphones don’t fit well at all, they’re huge! They’re uncomfortable (what is it with me and headphones you’re probably thinking) even with the added support of the ear clips (ear clips!?) and I can’t imagine having them in my ears for the duration of a workout.

This device made a bad impression on me from the get-go and while I found that wasn’t the complete mission I thought it was, in the end though, I still didn’t really warm up to the player. I’m more lukewarm I’d say. And lukewarm isn’t scorching hot, you know?

Turn ons
