Nobody wants to know how anti-virus works. We just want to know that it’s keeping our computers out of the line of fire. And as much as I had no idea how to review AVG Internet Security 2012, I could definitely see that it works…

The great thing about AVG Internet Security 2012 is that it doesn’t just protect the internet-related stuff! Upon closer investigation because the title had fooled me, I realised that this anti-virus gives you the complete package in keeping your PC safe compared to the other AVG anti-virus software available.

I believe that the sign of a good anti-virus is that you know it’s there, you just don’t see how it works. And for the most part, AVG Internet Security 2012 just did its thing. However there were notifications that popped up each time an e-mail was being received or whenever your PC connected to a new network. In particular the “scanning e-mail” notification got quite irritating after a while considering I have emails popping into my inbox virtually every second.

Thus I had to investigate a way to switch it off, because let’s be honest, if there is a notification there must be a way to switch it off. This was done with a few simple clicks of my mouse – click the Windows logo (start button), select AVG 2012, select AVG Interface, and finally select Email Protection and then deselect “scan incoming messages”.

The AVG Interface is not something I visited often as I didn’t find it necessary to check up on this hard-working anti-virus. But by opening the interface, you are quickly able to see when the last scan of your system was done. You can then use it to run a scan immediately on your whole computer, or only selected files or folders. You can also set it to scan your system on a specific day at a specific time. By clicking Overview, you will be redirected to the main screen.

I didn’t really play around with the settings on the Interface as most of them (except the scanning e-mails notification) were set as I would have had them.

Every now and then, a notification popped up to advise me that I had recently been protected by a number of threats. By selecting the hyperlink I was able to take a deeper look into what threats I had been exposed to over the past thirty days. The most surprising data on the report was the number of AVG users. If 100 million users is anything to go by, then AVG is definitely doing something right.
