Toshiba Satellite T110-12 H - In-depth Review

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • 29.5cm across (just slightly smaller than a standard school ruler)
  • Weighs a little less than 1.6kg
  •  Extended battery life
  •  Windows 7 Home Premium

Practical design has come a long way from beating something into shape with the ugly-stick.The Toshiba Satellite T110-12H netbook is a good example of pretty form meeting great function. The 11-inch (length) show-stopper carbon-fibre-red unit is sleek enough to fit into a medium-sized handbag and fits neatly into the skinny-latte sipping lightweight-team at just under 1.6kg.

Pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium, setting up is fairly easy and logging onto a Wi-Fi network is painless. Overall screen quality is good, the webcam works well enough and manufacturers peg the Satellite’s battery life at an estimated 8 hours.

I’d advise you to equip your Satellite with an external USB mouse as the trackpad is a finicky, with an awkward scroll-down action. The keyboard real estate could have been a little more well-planned (I found three odd little islands of nothingness between some keys) but your wrists will appreciate the smooth and cool finish of the unit, as mine did. The alphabet keys are decently-sized and my stumpy fingers appreciated being able to tap out an e-mail with ease.

The Satellite saves you the frustration of looking for suitable adaptors, as the unit comes with three differently plugged power cables; two-pin, three pin and international. The glossy Satellite is prone to fingerprints, but that’s soon fixed with a quick rub down from a lint-free cloth.

Here’s some geekery for you to consider: the Toshiba Satellite has the Windows 7 64-bit operating system, the CPU is an Intel Celeron 1.30 GHz and there’s 2GB of installed RAM. This makes it a speedy little number for basic bloggable photo-processing. I used mine to present a workshop on open source desk top publishing and the layout software didn’t hang or aggravate in the least, for which I was extremely grateful.

By virtue of its compact size, it’s hassle-free connectivity and overall speedy system performance, I’d rate the Satellite as the blog-girl-on-the-move’s dream machine.

Turn ons:

  •  Really compact and lightweight
  • The iron-red metallic finish is a show-stopper
  • Great overall performance

Turn offs:

  • The glossy finish is susceptible to fingerprints
  • Frustrating trackpad scrolling action.

Rating: 4/5

SRP: R4999.00

It's been a few times now that I've heard people complain about the trackpad on a Toshiba. Hubby's recently expired (Toshiba) machine had the same issue, so you'd find yourself flung from wherever you are in the middle of reading or editing to another page - in some cases a different window! - altogether.
This tendency is likely to put me off Toshiba as a whole. We're both in the market for new machines (my old DELL Inspiron 510m still works a treat but the hard drive is full and the machine has become slow in comparison with what's out there nowadays, in addition to concerns with regard to software compatibility as operating systems become more and more advanced...)
