How To: (And Where To) Find South African eBooks Online

Posted by Fiona Snyckers  Tuesday, 23 November 2010 Share

South African publishers have been slow to respond to the e-book revolution. However, more and more are now bringing out electronic versions of the books they publish. A number of South African authors have also taken the initiative and brought their own books out privately in an electronic format.

Here are some of the best sites to search for local e-book titles:

Kalahari.net

As a local bookseller, Kalahari stocks a number of South African titles in its e-bookstore. Simply click through here and search the left-handed 'Browse' toolbar for books by category. When you find a title you wish to purchase, click on it, then click on 'Add to basket'. You will be given the option to check out or continue shopping. If you choose to check out, you will be prompted to enter your credit card details. Once the purchase is complete, you will be able to retrieve your e-book in the Library Box.

Exclusive Books

Another local vendor that stocks South African e-book titles, Exclusive Books opened its e-bookstore in early 2010.

Click through here and browse through the left-handed toolbar for books by category. When you have chosen a book, click on it, and select 'Add to bag'. You will then be prompted to enter your credit card details. Please note that Exclusive Books ebook titles are not supported by Kindle or iPad devices at this time. You will need to read your purchased book on your computer.

Bored.com

This quirky little site is a great resource for schoolchildren or anyone researching historical South African texts. It has approximately 30 titles dating from the Anglo-Boer War and other periods in South Africa's history. These books are completely free to view. Just click here, to select the title you want. The whole book will download instantly for you to scroll through.

Amazon Kindle Store

Amazon carries a large number of South African titles – possibly larger than any other ebooks store. You don't need to own a Kindle in order to shop from the Kindle store. Many computers, e-readers, and tablets support the Amazon software that will enable you to read an ebook purchased from the Kindle store. Click through here and search through the list of categories on the left-hand side of the screen. Click on the title you wish to purchase, and select 'Buy now with 1-click'. If you do not already have an account with Amazon.com, you will need to set one up by entering your credit card details and address.

Your purchased book will be delivered to the device of your choice in less than 60 seconds - how simple is that?

Unfortunately Kalahari's eBooks aren't compatible with my iPad. Not sure about the others though
