How To: Get a Vanity URL on Facebook

About a year ago Facebook launched its custom username feature (otherwise known as a “vanity URL”) where you could personalise your facebook.com address. Quite a few people woke up at the crack of dawn when the feature was turned on so as to stake a claim on their vanity name before anyone else did.

Want to personalise your account? Want to make it easier for friends and family to find you? Here’s how…

For use on personal profiles:

Step 1:

Log into your Facebook account and click on to the “Account” dropdown menu and then click on “Account Settings”.

FB_1

Step 2:

Click on the “change” hyperlink on the “Username” option.

*Note: If you have already got a username, your name will appear on the right, as mine does.

FB_2

Step 3:

Type in the name you would like to have/use in the space provided. You will then need to click “Check Availability” to see if that name is available. If not, you will need to come up with alternative options until one is available.

*Note: Your username must be at least five characters in length and only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a full stop.

FB_3

Step 4:

Once you have found a username that is available, a pop up box will appear asking you to confirm or cancel your username choice. And with one more click, you have a personal Facebook URL.

*Note: You can only change your username once so be sure you think about the name you pick.

For use with pages:

Step 1:

You will need to be an “admin” of the page and the page will need to have more than 25 fans in order to set the username.

Step 2:

Log into your page’s Facebook account and click on the “Edit Page” button.

Step 3:

Click on the “Basic information” option as listed on the menu on the left.

Step 4:

Type in the “Username” you would like to have/use in the space provided and follow Step 3 and Step 4 as above.

*Note: You cannot change your page’s vanity URL once it has been set so double check your spelling etc.
