How To: Use Basic USSD

Do you always forget what number you need to dial to check your airtime balance? Or have you recently changed from one service provider to another?

To do this, you’ll need to use USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data). USSD is a technology used by the network to send information (usually text menus) between a mobile phone and an application on the network. USSD will allow you to request information using short codes (starting with * and ending with #), or menus from the network via your cellphone.

Here is a quick and easy guide to recharging your account, phoning voicemail, customer care and more.

How to check airtime balance:

  • Vodacom: *100#
  • MTN: *141#
  • Cell C: *101#
  • Virgin Mobile: *101#mobilephone
  • 8ta: *188#

How to recharge you account:

  • Vodacom: *100*01*recharge PIN#
  • MTN: dial *141* recharge voucher pin#
  • Cell C: *102*voucher pin#
  • Virgin Mobile:  '733' recharge pin 'call' button
  • 8ta:  *188*PIN#

Customer Care:

  • Vodacom: 110
  • MTN: 173
  • Cell C: 140
  • Virgin Mobile: 123
  • 8ta: 180

Voicemail:

  • Vodacom: 121
  • MTN: 100
  • Cell C: 112
  • Virgin Mobile: 121
  • 8ta: 181

How to send a "Please Call Me"

  • Vodacom: *140*(recipient’s cellphone number)#

To access the USSD command menu, use *180#

This is where you can convert airtime into data bundles.

    1) 100MB R50.00
    2) 250MB R100.00
    3) 500MB R150.00
    4) 1GB R250.00
    5) 2GB R380.00
    6) 5GB R800.00

By sending a SMS with only "do" in the body to 2222, will result in an SMS returned to you, containing your current balance.
